What are Superfoods – are they good for health?

We like giving names to things, in this case, a buzz word has been created around certain food types ‘Superfoods’, usually natural plant-based foods with extremely high levels of nutrients’ which when consumed can benefit your health.

Eating healthy whether it be superfoods or just normal food it is important so that you can perform at an optimum level with your mind and body. What food or type of foods you choose to eat daily controls how you’ll feel and can be a barometer to your overall health and energy levels. Eating a lot of junk food or sugar ridden diet, then don’t be surprised if you find that during the day you lack energy and feel tired.

Superfoods are foods (really no one told me that!)

Mostly plant-based but also some fish and dairy can also be considered in that bracket — these are thought to be nutritionally dense and thus good for one’s health. Gingko, Sweet Potato, Almonds, Blueberries, Salmon and acai berries are few examples of foods that have labeled the “superfoods”.

Consuming food items that are packed with nutrients (as many superfoods are) is surely a good idea.  The superfood trend exploits the fact that healthy lifestyle choices, including diet, can reduce the risk of chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease, and stroke.   It is also believed that these healthy food types can lead to overall well-being leading to improved emotional and physical health.  Some foods that have superfood status include those rich in antioxidants like beta-carotene, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A, C, E, flavonoids, and selenium.

You can also now get superfood based supplements, like Organic Pomegranate Capsules.  There is no reason to miss out on superfood nutrients if you’re on the rush, try some of the natural herbal superfoods juices and supllements.

A good example of superfood is Garlic, which contains a nutrient that may help reduce bad LDL cholesterol and blood pressure. The question is how many cloves of garlic do I need to eat daily to see health benefits, the answer is – you’d have to eat up to 28 – 30 cloves a day to gain enough nutrients for that day.

Usually, garlic is used in cooking, so you may decide to add a few extra, it is also used in curries, you may add a few extra garlic pieces.  The reality is you will not be able to consume enough on a daily basis if you are hoping for immediate changes in health.

However; if you develop a health regimen that includes you taking Garlic supplement’s daily or every other day topped up with dietary intake (added to curries, pizza’s, etc.) then over a period of day’s and weeks you should start to see the benefits.

In a similar way, many superfoods will not give you an immediate boost as many people expect, but rather over a period of weeks on consuming these superfoods you should start to see benefits in your health.
