5 Simple Ways to Start Eating Healthier This Year

We all know how important it is to eat healthily, not just to get energy from a healthy diet but also to maintain an overall good healthy body and mind.  In this post 5 Simple Ways to Start Eating Healthier This Year, we shall look at 5 things you can do jump start your healthier eating habits.

For many people the topic of a healthy diet is a bit like rocket science – so many books, videos, blog posts giving you so many mixed messages with so-called fad diets, it’s no wonder that people tend to switch off after a while or fail miserably trying a diet plan.

My simple approach is listed below, don’t go mad on cutting back on food that you enjoy, just apply moderation and exercise with these 5 Simple ways to healthier eating:

Select whole foods instead of highly processed junk.

Switch your frozen foods like pizza’s burgers with healthy whole foods like fresh fruits, vegetables, Superfoods, and whole grains. These whole foods and superfoods are packed with essential nutrients like antioxidants, protein, fiber, healthy fats, vitamins, and many minerals.  Include portions of whole foods in your breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  When you snack during the day, go for nuts and fruits rather than chocolates and crisps.

Stay away from sugary drinks and caffeine for a healthier lifestyle

If possible, cut down on sugary drinks, reduce caffeine intake.  Instead go for natural water, or fresh fruit or vegetable juices.  There is an increase in people with Type 2 diabetes and obesity, this is in most cases directly related to consuming too many sugary drinks, all this sugar and caffeine can lead to health conditions like liver damage, premature aging, mood swings, fatigue, and anxiety.

Get active and fit

Eating a healthy diet is one half the other is getting active and fit, combined these two lifestyle changes will make you healthier, happier and full of energy.  It is recommended that all people try to fit in at least 30mins of physical activity daily – that could just be some paced walking and slow jogging.  You could even get that level of exercise by hovering the house.

Do something active to maintain that flexibility and increase your stamina and energy.  People who exercise daily always have more energy, better mood, and overall well-being than those that do not.

Change your layout and food habits

Best to Keep healthier food options readily available, keep a fruit basket loaded with great superfoods like bananas.  Always store healthy food in easily reachable places at home and workplace.

Keep snaking containers at home and work, store healthy options like sultanas, almonds, pistachios, peanuts and dried berries in.  Don’t take chocolates or other sugary alternatives.  Go nutty for nuts and seeds like chia, flaxseed and pumpkin seeds are nutritional powerhouses. These superfood nutty nuts and seeds are an excellent source of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals like zinc, calcium, and magnesium.

Some healthier tips to keep in mind

  • Include plenty of fish in your diet, eating fish like salmon and mackerel twice a week will give you a good dose of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 is a superfood and improves brain, heart health and is said to reduce the risk Alzheimer’s, dementia and diabetes.
  • Eating in moderation and don’t overeat. It is claimed that eating on smaller plates with smaller portions could help you manage your weight and help improve health.  Eat on a smaller plate to feel full quicker and avoid overeating.
  • Add yogurt, apple cider vinegar, and soft cheeses or other probiotic foods to your diet like Kefir to increase healthy gut bacteria, these bacteria’s are responsible for good digestion, extraction of nutrients from food and building the immune system.

I would suggest never to go overboard with diet worries, start making the simple 5 diet and lifestyle changes listed above and you will see beneficial effects in your life.  Eat in moderation, eat healthy foods, including many superfoods in your diet as possible.  Get active and include exercise in your daily routine.  Relax and enjoy life.
