Citrulline is a substance called a non-essential amino acid. In the body, the kidneys change L-Citrulline into L-arginine resulting in a chemical called nitric oxide or ‘NO’. These compounds produced in the body are important to heart and blood vessel health.  If your heart and blood flow are good then erectile dysfunction can be reduced or cured, as long as you have no other medical conditions.

How does heart and blood Vessel Health help ED?

In order to get an erection, you need to have good blood flow to your genital region and enough blood pumped into the penile chambers to give you a full erection.  Now, if your heart is not healthy and does not pump enough blood down to your penis then the penile chambers fail to fill with blood resulting in ED, or the heart does not continue pumping the blood fast enough that you lose the erection resulting in you losing that erection.

If your blood vessels are also clogged up, narrow due to fatty deposits or cholesterol then Erectile Dysfunction will be a problem you will need to deal with.  In that case, no matter how good your heart pumps blood, it will not get down there fast enough or in great quantity to allow you to get an erection and retain it for long.  Heart and blood vessel health go hand in hand in supporting you to get rid of ED.

L-Arginine converted to NO, improves blood flow. Nitric oxide (NO), is a gas that helps dilate blood vessels. L-arginine has been shown to help people with heart disease or clogged arteries because of its vessel-widening abilities.

There are other ways to improve heart health and deal with clogged arteries with medication, alternative treatments, and most importantly through exercise.  But NO will give you that boost which can be of huge benefit to one suffering with ED.

Increasing NO in the body will help in getting a harder erection and sustain that erection for longer.  It’s not immediate so supplementing for a few days will be required in most cases before you notice beneficial effects unless you already happen to be healthy and fit, with no ED.

How to get L-Citrulline in your diet?

You can buy Citrulline supplements and use them to increase NO levels leading to a better erection.  Citrulline is also available in many fruits like Water Melon, Cucumbers etc.

This is a post for another day on what fruits give you the biggest share of Citrulline boost for dealing with Erectile Dysfunction.  For most you can get L-Citrulline supplements over the counter, unfortunately, there are no official dosing recommendations.

However, a study from the British Journal of Nutrition found that doses between 2 and 15 grams daily were safe and well-tolerated by the men in the study.  Citrulline supplements that one can get online or in stores range from 500 milligrams (mg) to 1.5 grams (g).

Summary

If you are suffering from Erectile Dysfunction, then supplementing with L-Citrulline may help in increasing your nitric oxide or ‘NO’ levels in the bloodstream.  This will help in improving blood flow to the penis and therefore aid in getting an erection, once you get that erection having extra NO will help in maintaining that erection for longer.

Sometimes ED is also resulting from other medical conditions like diabetes, in which case you should seek medical guidance before supplementing with L-Citrulline.
